DVD's at the theater
Posted 3 months ago by sarossell in Entertainment | Submit idea in this category
For people who have a valid movie ticket stub, give them the opportunity to purchase the DVD of the movie at a premium price for being the first on your block to own it. Include special packaging and other value-added extras to make it worth while for those who really loved the movie. Make it a one-of-a-kind offer that can only be purchased at the theater and it's a win-win for everyone. The movie companies get higher revenue for DVD sales that they can add to their weekend numbers and the viewers can get special collector editions DVD sets for the movie right away.

I felt the same way until I read that theaters are having to drastically alter the way they do business because people are becoming more selective about which movies they will spend money to see. Home televisions have improved to a level that has permanently changed the options for some, making it more economic and comfortable to wait three months for the DVD and see the movie at home. Theaters have had to ramp up to IMAX projectors, leather theater seats and even gourmet foods in some venues. If the idea was to just offer the same DVD you would get in three months anyway, I think it would be a poor solution. But the products I suggest would be strictly value-added designs with movie posters, mouse pads, coffee mugs, t-shirts, and other swag options. These items could only be purchased by the die hard fans who watched the movie and have a ticket stub. They would be the envy of their friends who, yes, would watch the video with them at home. And might just have to go watch the movie in the theater so they can get the same kit their friends got.

I agree with your thoughts on movie posyters. I'm a big fan of movie posters myself. In my office I have three; Tron, Big Trouble in Little China, and Real Genius. I rotate them with others I own as the seasons or other occasions dictate.

If I haven't fully convinced you, please continue. I value your perspective.

Well the only problem would be that film studios won't be thrilled having DVD copies floating around while the movie is still in theaters. Before you know it, friends will be lending other friends their copies, and this will deter people from spending money at the box office to watch the film theaters.

What if they sell other merchandise for the film at the theater? I always liked the movie posters that are displayed throughout the theaters..it would be nice if those were on sale..
